Week 2, lesson 4 Phoneme "m" Grapheme "m" - Phonics Phase 2 - Lesson plan
English Resource Description
In the second week, day four of the phonics phase 2 curriculum, the lesson plan introduces the phoneme /m/ and its corresponding grapheme
The lesson revisits previous learning with an active game, where children run to the correct wall displaying a grapheme and its pictophone after hearing words that start with one of the four phonemes. Following this energetic start, the teaching segment includes a story about the 'Moose with a Juice,' where the /m/ sound is emphasised to help children associate the phoneme with the grapheme. An action is paired with the story—students mime drinking juice and rubbing their tummies while saying /m/—to further reinforce the sound. Practice activities involve finger writing the grapheme in the air or on a peer's back, and a 'Sound Scramble' game where students form and blend words using known phonemes. The application of the lesson involves writing the grapheme on mini whiteboards, with extension activities that include sorting and drawing, to consolidate the learning.
